Jaz Kilmister is a photographer and visual artist based in London. Born in Singapore and raised in South East England, Kilmister received his undergraduate education in design and photography at West Surrey College of Art & Design.
He specialised in digital design, working in advertising as an agency creative, designer and later freelance. After establishing a creative agency in 2006, Kilmister returned to freelance design and creative roles in 2016. During this time, he also trained in photography at Kensington & Chelsea College (later Morley College, Chelsea) where he developed his practice in fine art photography.
I'm interested in photography as a means to explore the nature of truth. As a way of examining the intersection between perception and illusion. I try to explore and illuminate the strangeness of a reality that I believe is poorly understood.
I strive to capture a psychological space that is both familiar and elusive, like a half-remembered place or the subtext of a forgotten dialogue. To look beneath the surface of the observable in hope of recovering artefacts of value.
My process involves merging darkroom-exposed mixed media, collage and sculpture with digital composite techniques. I combine a rigorous process with chance and intuition to find my way through concept and representation.
It is with a sense of wonder and an archeological curiosity that I pursue my artistic work. In essence an effort to record with a camera that which eludes observation.
